ABOUT KERR RESERVOIR

Kerr Lake, officially known as the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir, sits just south of Sallisaw along the Arkansas River and was created in 1970 with the completion of the Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam as part of the McClellan–Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.

Originally built to improve commercial navigation and flood control, the reservoir quickly became a hub for outdoor recreation in eastern Oklahoma. As the lake filled, submerged timber, river channels, and sandbars created ideal habitat for bass, catfish, crappie, and striped bass, drawing anglers from across the region.

By the 1970s and 1980s, Kerr Lake had developed a reputation as one of Oklahoma’s premier fishing destinations, hosting recreational anglers and tournaments alike.

Today, with more than 40,000 acres of water and miles of shoreline, Kerr Lake continues to be a favorite destination for fishermen who appreciate both its history and its abundant waters!
